ART GALLERY ASSISTANT
Class I, Step 1 - $9.37/hr
Up to 15 hours per week
-This is a student position-

JOB FUNCTIONS
- Work with gallery team in the execution of 4 gallery exhibitions per semester, and 1-2 during the summer as Publicist, Reception Coordinator, Registrar or Relations and Documentation Coordinator
- Mail/ Distribute call-for-entries and publicity assets
- Update social networking sites such as facebook, wordpress and execute online publicity campaigns as assigned by Art Gallery Assistant Manager and Manager
- Monitor and assist in preparation for events such as: lectures, readings, workshops, artist talks, and crafts fair
- Brainstorm exhibit themes or related event concepts for future exhibits when required
- Answer phone calls/ communicate with exhibiting artist, vendors, collaborators and event coordinators
- Install and hang exhibits and prepare for reception
- Attend weekly meetings
- Work on individual projects
- Other duties as assigned
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Enrolled at SF State with a minimum of 6 units a semester
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Work and attend all Thursday night receptions, from 5-8 pm, 4 times each semester, attend weekly staff meetings and willing to work 4 Saturdays per semester (for installation) if requested
- Must work well under pressure and capable of multi-tasking
- Must be able to work closely in a highly collaborative and creative team environment and have the willingness to perform a variety of tasks and a desire to widen skill sets
- Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds, climb ladders, paint, and capable of using basic power tools
- Apple/ Mac experienced with fluent working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, and Photoshop
Preferred
- Art History, Studio Art, Conceptual Information Arts, Design and Industry or Museum Studies Major
- Experience in exhibition design and preparation, or previous art gallery or studio gallery experience
- Knowledge of InDesign and Illustrator – CS5, and video editing such as Final Cut is extremely helpful
- Knowledge of working within a large academic and non-profit setting, previous office experience is desired
- Experience gallery lighting design, framing artwork and shipping
- Experience with vinyl signage machines
