ART GALLERY MANAGER
Class III, Step 1 - $13.00/hr
Up to 25 Hours per week
-This is a student position-

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Expand and update call – for – entry mailing list to ensure that exhibits represents the interests, values and experiences of the diverse campus community.
  • Work in coordination with the ROMC Program Administrator to support and enhance programming that draws vital connections between shared human struggles and experiences and common solutions.
  • Act as a jury coordinator for the selection of works for future exhibitions.
  • Communicate and schedule appointments with exhibiting artist.
  • Recruit and train gallery staff, interns and volunteers in gallery operations, exhibitions and provide gallery reception during regular business hours.
  • Interview and hire in coordination with direct report.
  • Act as an installation coordinator for the set – up and hanging exhibitions.
  • Monitor and keep track of supplies and the supply budget.
  • Attend bi-weekly meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Gallery Marketing

  • Establish and develop fundraising events with partnering galleries.
  • Collaborate with the Fund Development Officer and other department heads to better position the gallery for grant funds.
  • Refine the mission of the gallery to include language such as “…art within a global perspective that draws vital connections between shared struggles and common solutions”. Work with the Publicity Department to create a brochure that describes the gallery, its mission and goals.
  • Work with Publicity, ROMC Program manager and other departments to expand gallery website for greater visibility.

Diversity of Exhibits

  • Establish and develop an artist registry, organized by a theme or medium.
  • Reach out to artist groups and networks to increase artist registry and bring visibility to gallery, e.g. Richmond Arts Center
  • Work with ROMC manager, faculty, students, and the outside community to design thematic programming around the exhibit to ensure that the art is relevant to current issues; and to enhance the exposure and learning about the phenomena being explored.

Gallery Outreach

  • Research and expand the “call for art” process to ensure greater outreach, e.g. writing a theme, doing research on the theme, and seeking artists and programs that will compliment the theme.
  • Work with other campus and off-campus galleries and museums to collaborate on exhibits and develop partnerships.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • QUALIFICATIONS

    • Preferred museum/gallery experience or the equivalent.
    • Work at least 3 Saturdays for installations and at least 3 Thursdays for receptions.
    • Previous museum/gallery curatorial experience and / or exhibit research/ installation background.
    • Willingness to learn and grow beyond one’s current state of cross-cultural awareness.
    • Ability to work within a multi-lingual environment that is ethnically and culturally diverse, and that emphasizes the knowledge and values related to cross cultural communication and relations.
    • Must be enrolled at SFSU with a minimum of 6 units a semester.
    • Excellent organizational skills.
    • Detail and team oriented.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    Preferred

    • Art History, Studio, IAC or Museum Studies major
    • Apple / Mac computer experience and knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator
    • Knowledge in exhibition design and preparation
    • Experience framing artwork
